I have decided to go back to a simple café complet in the near future. Because this rather unconventional dinner, in its modesty, is just the thing for these days. After all, understatement is a virtue that should be carefully cultivated in times of resurgent excess.

However, I have so far been a poor ambassador for abstinence, because I want to discover something new every day. For example, a few days ago I was on an inspiring cultural trip to the Valais (Eskapade Valais). And the plan is to lose myself in the art museums of Basel next (supplement: Map of Basel). I find the greatest joy not in the pomp and Instagram likes, but in the passion and style - like in an honest café complet, which at first glance seems less glamorous. Because when airy, fragrant bread, the finest Anke, well-hung dried meat and spicy cheese are served with noble nonchalance, it beats a lavishly staged beef fillet by far in terms of style and casualness.
