The term ' denim' originally comes from "de Nîmes", which means "from Nimes". In this French city, the 'fabric from Nimes' (fr. ' Serge de Nimes') was originally produced for work clothes since 1557.

Denim, colloquially also simply called 'jeans', is the name for a hard-wearing and durable cotton fabric with a special weave, which is used to make shoulder bags, for example.

The durable material achieved its worldwide breakthrough when Levi Strauss used it for jeans.

The typical optical effect is created by dyeing 'only' the warp thread with indigo and using raw white weft thread.
